Super Bowl XLVII Recap

Super Bowl XLVII etched its place into NFL history this past Sunday with the Baltimore Ravens winning their second Lombardi trophy in franchise history while sending Ray Lewis out a champion. If that wasn’t enough, there is a lot more! The Ravens jumped out to an early lead and looked as if it was going to be a “purple pain” runaway with their dominance in the 1st half, leading 21-6 at halftime.
While both teams made their adjustments Beyoncé took the stage and put on one of the best Super Bowl halftime shows of all-time. The halftime show featured Beyoncé singing songs from old and new, a small performance with Destiny’s Child, and a stage covered in a spectrum of lights. The reason I mention the spectrum of lights that was planted on Beyoncé’s stage? Keep reading! As if we hadn’t had enough fireworks at halftime, Jacoby Jones decided we needed some more as he returned the opening second half kickoff 108 yards for a touchdown to give Baltimore a 28-6 lead with 14:46 left in the third quarter. Despite all the excitement and energy in the Mercedes-Benz Superdome the lights went out quickly, literally. At the 13:22 mark in the third quarter and San Francisco facing a 3rd & 13 the lights abruptly went out causing the a power outage in the stadium leading to a 34 minute delay. Once the action resumed all of Baltimore’s momentum had seemed to leave the building and San Francisco made sure to capitalize. The 49ers began a furious comeback attempt a little later in the quarter when Colin Kaepernick capped off a 7 play, 80 yard drive by hitting Michael Crabtree for a 31 yard touchdown reception. A quick 3 & out by Baltimore followed by a 32 yard punt return by Ted Ginn Jr. led to a 6 yard touchdown run by Frank Gore. When it rains, it pours as a few plays later Ray Rice would fumble deep in his own territory, setting up a David Akers field goal.
All of a sudden we had a ball game, 28-23 Ravens early in the fourth quarter and San Francisco with all the momentum; but Joe Cool wasn’t fazed. He would lead Baltimore on a 10 play, 59 yard drive ending in a Justin tucker field goal to get the lead up to eight. The young 49ers’ star wasn’t fazed either, he would march his team down the field and close it off with a 15 yard touchdown run of his own to cut the lead to two; the two-point conversion pass failed. After Tucker kicked another field goal Baltimore led by five with under five minutes left. Kaepernick once again led the 49ers down the field and at the two-minute warning setup a 2nd & Goal at the Raven 5. A perfect story book ending would take place as the Ray Lewis-led Raven Defense made one final goal-line stand keeping San Francisco out of the end zone and away from the Lombardi as the Ravens held on to win 34-31.
Joe Flacco was named Super Bowl MVP, Ray Lewis goes out on top as a champion, and John Harbaugh is the victorious Harbaugh brother. For what looked to be a Baltimore blowout, this game ended up providing all of us an exciting finish for the ages. Joe Flacco has earned himself a nice amount of money and in my books can now be considered an elite quarterback. Baltimore Ravens, Super Bowl XLVII Champions
