The Rise of Kyrie Irving

Since his lone year at Duke, Kyrie Irving has always had high NBA expectations. He was drafted first overall in 2011 and made strides to put together a successful rookie campaign, earning him Rookie of the Year. Despite his fantastic performance the Cavaliers struggled to 21-45 record and went unnoticed for most of the season. Coming in to this season the expectations for the Cavs weren't much higher, but the excitement for Irving's second season is what kept the fan base buzzing. Cavs fans and the rest of the NBA held their collective breaths when Irving broke his right hand after slapping it against a padded wall out of frustration in a mid-July practice. But fear not he was healthy for the season opener and got of to a hot start to the 2012-2013 season, averaging 22.9 points and 5.6 assists thru the first ten games. He would miss the next three weeks do to an index finger injury, but returned in the middle of December. His month averages since his return have been 22.5 points and 5.5 assists in 11 December games, 25.8 points and 5.4 assists in 14 January games, and 21.6 points and 6.2 assists in nine February games (Stats as of 2/24/13).

2013 Rise of Stardom
Despite Kyrie's solid first ten games the Cavs limped to a 2-8 record. In his absence they didnt fare any better going 2-9. In Irving's first game back from injury he lit the Lakers up for 28 points on 11-21 shooting, 4-6 from three with 11 assists to lead his Cavaliers to their fifth win of the season. After fracturing a facial bone in a hard fall against the Bucks, Irving donned a black, batman-esque, protective mask against the Knicks where he would have a career high 41 points, making 15 of 25 shots, 5-8 from three. Not only did this give the media a cool Batman image of Kyrie, but he became the youngest player in NBA history to score 40 points in Madison Square Garden. Up to this point Irving has had a sensational sophomore season posting 23.5 points and 5.7 assists per game and with a PER of 22.73. He rightly earned his first NBA All-Star selection, a second appearance in the Rising Stars Challenge, and a first appearnce in the Foot Locker Three-Point Contest.

2013 All-Star Weekend
Based on stats and the "it" factor Kyrie Irving should be a household name, but with the Cavaliers struggles and irrelevancy the average fan wouldn't have been aware. All-Star weekend was the perfect stage for Kyrie to have his coming out party, and boy did he have one! In a weekend that had Irving involved in each of the three days was perfect.

In the Rising Stars Challenge he posted 32 points on 14 of 20 shooting, 4-8 from three, with six rebounds and six assists in defeat. He was the Team Shaq leading scorer and would have got the MVP if not for Kenneth Faried's 40 point, 10 rebound performance. He also had the highlight of the night by breaking the ankles of Brandon Knight on a nasty crossover.

In the Foot Locker Three Point Contest Irving amazed with a score of 18 (11-15 on the last three racks with 2 money balls) in the team round, which was good enough to advance to the finals. In the finals he bettered his first round score by posting a contest-high 23 points in his final round, earning him this year's Three Point crown. Irving's championship winning round consisted of making all five shots on the first rack, four out of five on the second rack, a perfect third rack, hitting three of five on each of the last two racks, and hitting his first three money balls.

Irving wrapped up his break out weekend with his first appearance in the All-Star Game. In 25 minutes off the bench he had a very impressive 15 points, 3 rebounds, and 4 assists. Kyrie Irivng picked the perfect time to assert himself as one of the premier young stars in the NBA by answering to the biggest weekend of the regular season's bright lights. He impressed and amazed throughout each event of the weekend to get his name out there for the average NBA fan. i think its safe to say the Cavaliers are finally free of the dark shadow cast be Lebron's decision and can fully turn forward to the Kyrie Irving era. His All-Star weekend will be one to be remembered but also is one that gives Cleveland fans hope for the future of their and Kyrie's Cavaliers.

2013 NBA All-Star Weekend Full Recap

NBA All-Star weekend is long over and the second half of the season has officially begun, but better late than never with my recap of the festivities!

Celebrity Game and Rising Star Challenge
To start the weekend we had the annual All-Star Celebrity Game. This year's game wasn't as competitive as we have seen before, as the game got out of hand by the second quarter. Regardless of the outcome, we all watch this game to see which celebrities have game and which ones just look silly playing ball. The West won 58-38, led by Arne Duncan's 11 points and Kevin Hart's 5 points and 2 rebounds. Hart's performance was good enough to earn him the MVP honor for the second consecutive year. Overall I enjoyed the game, especially Kevin Hart's MVP acceptance speech.

The Rising Stars Challenge followed with the second edition of Team Shaq vs. Team Chuck. Shaq O'Neal had appeared to construct the better of the two teams, but that's why we play the game! Team Chuck dominated this one, as expected on the boards and inside, but also dominated the shooting statistics. Here are some telling stats from the game: Team Shaq shot 9-32 from behind the arc and had 24 rebounds (7 offensive). Team Chuck grabbed a whopping 51 rebounds (21 offensive) and made 17 of 32 three-pointers. We all figured that Chuck's squad would have the edge in rebounding, but who saw them lighting it up like that! Kyrie Irving had a fantastic performance with 32 points, 6 rebounds, and 6 assists. While Kenneth Faried stole the show with 40 points, 10 rebounds, and 2 assists; good enough to lead Team Chuck to a second straight win and grab this year's MVP honors. Looks like Charles Barkley gets TNT bragging rights for a another year.
MVP: Kenneth Faried (Team Chuck)
Team Chuck 163  Team Shaq 135

All-Star Saturday Night
The lineup for All-Star Saturday Night included the Sears Shooting Stars, Taco Bell Skills Challenge, Foot Locker Three-Point Contest, and the Sprite Slam Dunk Contest. This year there was an added twist, East vs. West. In each of the individual competitions there were six participants, four in the Shooting Stars, three from an Eastern Conference team and three from a Western Conference team. Each event had a team round which resulted in the top player from each conference (1st place out of three participants in the conference) advancing into the championship vs. the other conference winner. The three participants scores were added up for each conference and the conference with the better score received a set amount of points. The individual that won the event championship won himself the event's trophy and his conference ten additional points. Th Slam Dunk contest had the highest point totals for the team round and 55 for the championship, with and adding 10 points for each perfect dunk. If this sounds confusing don't worry, it will be clearer as we go through. It was for a good cause as the winning conference would have money donated to their representing charity.

Sears Shooting Stars
The night began in style, as four teams comprised of one current NBA player (Harden, Westbrook, Lopez, and Bosh), one current WNBA player, and one NBA legend took the court for the usual race against the clock to make six spread out shots, ending with the half-court shot, in as quick as possible. In the team round Team Westbrook defeated Team Harden while Team Bosh defeated Team Lopez. The combined time of Teams Westbrook and Harden gave the West the better team round score, resulting in 20 points. In the Championship it was Team Bosh taking home the crown with a time of 1 min 29 sec and earning the East 10 points. This event is just a fun event to get the night started and this year's didn't miss a beat. Maybe some find it redudant and old, but I enjoy the array of shooting and the new East vs. West format added a sense of electric to the atmosphere to begin a festive night.
Competition Grade: B
Team Bosh was led by Chris Bosh, Swin Cash, and Dominique Wilkins.
Score: West 20, East 10

Taco Bells Skill Challenge
This competition had a nice mix of young and old talent this year. In the team round Jrue Holiday stole the spotlight for the East by putting up a time of 29.3 seconds, easily ousting Brandon Knight and Jeff Teague. The hometown man, Jeremy Lin struggled in his first round run with a time of 35.8 seconds. While Damien Lillard put up the best time of anyone in the first round by cruising through the course in 28.8 seconds. Defending champ Tony Parker struggled, finishing with a time of 48.7 seconds. Parker's struggles gave the East 30 points for winning the team round, but it was the West who got the additional 10. In the finals Damien Lillard took adavantage of an opening left by Holiday, marking a time of 29.8 seconds and winning by a comfortable 5.8 second margin. I was disappointed with Parker's performance, but also impressed by both of the finalists.
Competition Grade: B-
Winner: Damien Lillard (POR)
Score: West 30, East 40

Foot Locker Three-Point Contest
For the third event of the night, six of the finest Three shooters in the NBA took their place in the spotlight and battled it out over 25 balls in five racks. Steph Curry started off cold, missing eight of his first ten shots, but then heated up down the stretch hitting 3-5 on the Rack 3, 5-5 on Rack 4, and 4-5 on Rack 5, along with all three money balls (2 points each) for a total of 17. Ryan Anderson quickly ousted my favorite for the competition with a score of 18. Anderson started off on fire hitting eight of his first ten and then having a perfect Rack 4, but despite hitting  four money balls his struggles from Racks 3 and 5 would end up eliminating him. Coming out of the West was Matt Bonner who scored 20 points by putting together a very consistent round; making at least three shots in each of the first four racks along with three money balls.

Among the East shooters Kyrie Irving impressed with a solid round of 18 points, made 11 of 15 shots (2 money balls) in the last three racks. Irving's performance would hold up to advance him to the championship with Paul George struggling to only get ten points and Steve Novak cooling off after a hot start, 8-10 with 2 money balls on the first two racks, to finish with a score of 17. In the finals it was Bonner vs. Irving, where the young superstar would walk away with the title. Irving's championship round of 23 marked as the best of anyone in this year's competition. Matt Bonner hit four of the five money balls and had three racks of making 4-5 shots, but this still wasn't enough to beat Irving. I enjoyed this competition the most on the night and was really impressed by Kyrie Irving's performance, he is definately going to be a superstar for a long time! Other than Paul George's ten I liked the competitiveness from each conference. Concerning the East vs. West, the scores of Curry, Anderson, and Bonner gave the West the team score; but Irving's victory earned the East ten points.
Competition Grade: A-
Winner: Kyrie Irving (CLE)
Score: West 70, East 50

Sprite Slam Dunk Contest
The field for this year's Slam Dunk Contest looked to be jammed-pack with creativity and excitment. Well, I was one of many who ended up being disappointed and somewhat bored during the show. Gerald Green was my pick to win it, but his second dunk failure blew up and idea of that. Green's first dunk was flawless, successfully converting off the side of the backboard. His second dunk started by cutting off the net and was primed for a roof-rocking response, one problem - dunk attempt failed. Green tried to dunk the ball twice and after many tries was unsuccessful. James White was a major disappointment, but not to my surprise. I suspected he wouldn't do much and other than taking off from the free throw line I was right. He started off with his "Flight White" campaign by having a lane of flight attendants dressed in Knicks colors to run through on his two-handed dunk from the free throw line. His second dunk was also from the line, but after numerous attempts it went unlanded. Terrence Ross had a solid first dunk, and after the barrage of misses by his competition he landed a pretty 360 spin-around dunk to easily get him into the finals.

Kenneth Faried was the first West dunker to go and impressed! His first dunk wasn't the best choice for a dunk contest, but his second one - WOW! Faried pulled out an off the backboard catch and in-between-legs dunk on his second try but was not rewarded with a spot in the finals. Eric Bledsoe can throw it down, but he didn't exactly show that on Saturday night. He had two solid dunks but his inability to convert them took the crowd out of it with the missses. I was also surprised we didn't see Chris Paul or Jamal Crawford be called on to assist. The defending champ Jeremy Evans brought the energy that the crowd needed. To start his night he dunked over former Jazz center Mark Eaton and followed that up with a 360, two-ball dunk. Evans barely advanced to the finals but in my eyes he was the right choice.

That set up a Ross vs. Evans final. The finals came down to a fan vote between each of the contestants two dunks. Jeremy Evans began with dunking over a self-made portrait of himself doing the same dunk. Both the dunk and his artistic ability impressed. Ross responded with a off-backboard tribute to Vince Carter. In their last dunks of the night, Evans caught an alley-oop from Dahntay Jones and briefly floated on way to slamming it home. Terrence Ross wrapped the contest up by dunking over a small ball boy, the kid had no idea or practice, to win the late roar of the crowd and recieve 58% of the fan vote to win. Terrence Ross deserved to win the competition, not as much because of his dunks, but because he was able to get a rather docile Houston crowd on their feet and draw the most enegry out of the six dunkers. For the East-West battle, both conferences earned 20 bonus points (2 perfect dunks each), the West won the team round with the debacle of Gerald Green and James White and earned 50 points. Ross's victory earned the East 55 points. The dunk contest majorily lacked energy and crowd enthusiasm and there was too many misses by the participants. Hopefully we see better in 2014.
Competition Grade: C
Winner: Terrence Ross (TOR)
Score: West 140, East 125

Congrats to Team Bosh, Damien Lillard, Kyrie Irving, and Terrence Ross on their competition victories! The West won State Farm All-Star Saturday Night by a score of 140-125 and earns their two charities $350,000! While the East charities still receive $150,000. NBA fans got our yearly treat of a night filled with skill and style competitions and this year four charities also get to win!

2013 NBA All-Star Game
To conclude the festive weekend in Houston was the 2013 All-Star Game. The Game's brightest stars finally got to take the court and put on a show on Sunday night. As expected this was a high-scoring affair that featured a lot of 3's, dunks, and little defense. The West led by four at the half and would take that lead into the fourth quarter. It was a tight back and forth quarter that saw the West outscore the East 35-34, sealing the 143-138 victory. Carmelo Anthony led the East with 26 points and 12 rebounds and Lebron had 19 points, 3 rebounds, and 5 assists. Leading the West was Chris Paul who posted 20 points, 15 assists, and 4 steals to grab the MVP. Kevin Durant had 30 points and Kobe had 9 points, 4 rebounds, 8 assists, and 2 late-game blocks of Lebron! Kyrie Irving capped of his eventful and scene-breaking weekend with 15 points, 3 rebounds, and 4 assists.
MVP: Chris Paul (West)
Final Score: West 143 East 138

2013 All-Star Rising Challenge: Team Shaq vs. Team Chuck

NBA All-star weekend begins tonight with the celebrity game on ESPN at 7 p.m. EST. and following that is the BBVA Rising Star Challenge, more commonly known as Team Shaq vs. Team Chuck (9:00 p.m. TNT). This is the second year this event has been dubbed the battle of the two most-entertaining TNT basketball personalites, Shaquille O'Neal (Shaq) and Charles Barkley (Chuck). Formerly known as the Rookie-Sophomore game, the concept of a game between the NBA's most promising sophomores and rookies is still intact; but instead of rooks vs. sophs, we have Shaq vs. Chuck! The BBVA Rising Star challenge held its draft on February 7th, where Shaq and Chuck choose from the eligible players for this year's game. Eight days later, these two teams are ready to square off to not prove whose better rookies or sophomores, but to give Shaq or Chuck the bragging rights for this year. Shaq got the first pick this year to compensate for Chuck's 2012 victory. Can Team Chuck make it two for two, or will Team Shaq even the score? You be the judge....

Here are the rosters: *Rookies in red*

              Team Shaq                    Pick(Overall)                Team Chuck

1 (1) Damian Lillard, PG (POR)                          1 (2) Anthony Davis, PF (NO)
2 (3) Kyrie Irving, PG (CLE)                               2 (4) Kenneth Faried, PF (DEN)
3 (5) Andre Drummond, C (DET)*                      3 (6) Kawhi Leonard, SF (SAS)
4 (7) Klay Thompson, SG (GS)                            4 (8) Bradley Beal, SG (WSH)
5 (9) Harrison Barnes, SF (GS)                             5 (10) Ricky Rubio, PG (MIN)
6 (11) Chandler Parsons, SF (HOU)                     6 (12) Tristan Thompson, PF (CLE)
7 (13) Dion Waiters, SG (CLE)                            7 (14) Nikola Vucevic, C (ORL)
8 (15) Michael Kidd-Gilchrist, SF (CHA)            8 (16) Brandon Knight, PG (DET)
9 (17) Tyler Zeller, C (CLE)                                 9 (18) Isaiah Thomas, PG (SAC)
10 (19) Kemba Walker, PG (CHA)                       10 (20) Alexey Shved, SG (MIN)
Andrew Nicholson, PF (ORL)*
* Nicholson repalce an injured Drummond

Team Shaq's roster houses six rookies and a bunch of prolific offensive talent, while Team Chuck is a team with a strong interior that's made up of mostly sophomores. Cleveland leads all teams with four players in this game, there is hope! While Charolette, Minnesota, Detroit, Orlando, and Golden State each have two players. For fans of the Cavs, Bobcats, and Magic there is hope for a brighter future. Golden State fans have seen their two young guys make a massive impact so far this season and Detroit's young guys are making a nice mid-season push for a East playoff spot. Minnesota fans have seen their young talent and backcourt duo of Rubio and Shved shine at times this year, but an unfair rash of injuries have derailed the T-Wolves to this point. Team Shaq has a multitude of scorers and playmakers. He has three great point guards in Walker, Irving and Lillard, Chandler Parsons who is really coming into his own this season, along with an array of three point ability in his roster. team Chuck resembles a big, burly team with the inside presence of  Davis, Faried, Thompson, and Vucevic. His backcourt is the T'Wolve duo of Rubio and Shved which should provide great passing and big-game spark. But none of his guards are particulary strong shooters.

Prediction
Team Shaq has a nice balance of shooters, ballhandlers, and playmakers. Team Chuck is the bigger team, but lacks the natural scorers to be able to keep up with Team Shaq. Irving, Lillard, and crew will be too much for all the young bigs of Team Chuck to handle; Shaq put togethet the better roster and his team is a heavy favorite to win this game.

Team Shaq 157  Team Chuck 130
MVP's: Chandler Parsons and Damien Lillard

2013 NBA All-Star Game Rosters

Since we have already taken a look at the Sprite Slam Dunk and Foot Locker 3 Point contests it's time to talk about the All-Start game itself. The Eastern Conferene has six first-time selections and Luol Deng making his second. The starters are not much of a surprise: Lebron, D-Wade, KG, Melo, and Rondo (None are a surprise, the reason I called them by nickname). The Western Conference starters misewell be renamed "Team LA" as Kevin Durant is the only starter who does not play for a Los Angeles team. James Harden is a first time selection while LaMarcus Aldridge, David Lee, and Zach Randolph all are making their second appearances. In this piece I am going to list the starters and reserves for each conference and simply give my observations about each roster.

Eastern Conference

Starters
G - Rajon Rondo (BOS)* 4th selection
G - Dwyane Wade (MIA) 9th selection
F - LeBron James (MIA) 9th selection
F - Carmelo Anthony (NYK) 6th selection
F - Kevin Garnett (BOS) 15th selection
Reserves
G - Kyrie Irving (CLE) 1st selection
G - Jrue Holiday (PHI) 1st selection
F - Chris Bosh (MIA) 8th selection
F - Luol Deng (CHI) 2nd selection
F - Paul George (IND) 1st selection
C - Tyson Chandler (NYK) 1st selection
C - Joakim Noah (CHI) 1st selection
C - Brook Lopez (BRK)* 1st selection
*Brook Lopez replaces an injured Rajon Rondo
Coach - Erik Spoelstra (MIA)
dadasdada

Western Conference

Starters
G - Chris Paul (LAC) 6th selection
G - Kobe Bryant (LAL) 15th selection
F - Kevin Durant (OKC) 4th selection
F - Blake Griffin (LAC) 3rd selection
F - Dwight Howard (LAL) 7th selection
Reserves
G - James Harden (HOU) 1st selection
G - Tony Parker (SAS) 5th selection
G - Russell Westbrook (OKC) 3rd selection
F - LaMarcus Aldridge (POR) 2nd selection
F - Tim Duncan (SAS) 14th selection
F - Zach Randolph (MEM) 2nd selection
F - David Lee (GS) 2nd selection
Coach - Greg Popovich (SAS)

Observations
The Western Conference is the better conference as in the quality of the teams, but in All-Star rosters its an even fight that slightly favors the East.
- I like the East's starting 5 over the West's becasue LeBron, D-Wade, and Melo makeup a trio of elite 1-on-1 players. Durant is arguably the best 1-on-1 player in the league and Kobe is still top 10, maybe even top 5, but three is better than two.
- The West's reserve front court is uncomparable, consisting of Aldridge, Lee, Randolph, and Duncan
- The youth movement is obvious in the Eastern Conference with six 1st time selections and Luol Deng making his 2nd appearance.
- KG and Melo are teammates for one night! This provides us with a fantasy come true, as roughly a month after Melo waited for KG outside in the Madison Square Garden bus terminal to "talk" about some in-game trash talk we now get to see these two on the same bench let alone sharing the same frontcourt.
- Kobe and KG both are making their 15th appearance, sharing the most among any of the all-stars in this year's game. Tim Duncan will be playing in his 14th all-star game
- Miami has the most selection among any team with three all-stars, two starters
- LA has a total of four selections, two for the Clippers and two for the Lakers, all four are starters
All in all the All-Star game is ment to be a fun, fan-loving spectacle where we get to see the game's biggest names and talents perform and do crazy things. Defense is not wanted or needed in this game so expect high-flying dunks, alley-opps, and many other things that make our jaw drop every year. Even though this is just a big pick-up game, its a way to say thanks to all loyal NBA fans by putting on a high scoring and a high-flying show!

Stephen Curry (Golden State)

-Season averages of 20.9 ppg on 43.1%
-From behind behind the arc is at 44.8% (147/328)
-One of the biggest All-Star game snubs, but at least we will see him shooting 3's
-Has become one of the surest 3 shooters in the game
-Is ranked 2nd among NBA qualified 3 shooters

My Foot Locker 3-Point Predictions

6. Paul George, He has become a rising star this year but, he is the only man under 40% who will be   shooting
5. Matt Bonner, Don't get me wrong he is a very dangerous 3 shooter, but i can't see him outlasting some of the younger players in this event
4. Steve Novak, One of the purest 3 shooters in the league but i don't think he will be able to find the rhythm necessary to win this event
3. Ryan Anderson, the only participant with experince in the three point contest. He cane easily win this event but what's not to like about my top two?
2. Kyrie Irving, Becoming an absolute beast in the association. He can easily win with that gaudy 42.9% from 3, the third best percentage among the six men competing
1. Stephen Curry, has taken the second most 3's this season (328) and has the best percentage (44.8%) among this year's field of six.

After meeting our Dunkers these are my predictions

6. Kenneth Faried - A lot of power, but not enough style and creativity
5. Eric Bledsoe - Has the dark-horse potential and the hops, but will it be enough?
4. Terrence Ross - Has the explosiveness, but can he do something wild to excite the crowd?
3. James White - Draws a lot of hype and is the public favorite, can glide from the free throw line
2. Jeremy Evans - It's hard to repeat in any sport or competition, can he top last year's performance?
1. Gerald Green - Will want to add to his collection of slam dunk hardware and has show his creativity before. I think Green will come out and do something that will blow our minds and rejuvenate this competition

Super Bowl XLVII Recap

Super Bowl XLVII etched its place into NFL history this past Sunday with the Baltimore Ravens winning their second Lombardi trophy in franchise history while sending Ray Lewis out a champion. If that wasn’t enough, there is a lot more! The Ravens jumped out to an early lead and looked as if it was going to be a “purple pain” runaway with their dominance in the 1st half, leading 21-6 at halftime.
While both teams made their adjustments Beyoncé took the stage and put on one of the best Super Bowl halftime shows of all-time. The halftime show featured Beyoncé singing songs from old and new, a small performance with Destiny’s Child, and a stage covered in a spectrum of lights. The reason I mention the spectrum of lights that was planted on Beyoncé’s stage? Keep reading! As if we hadn’t had enough fireworks at halftime, Jacoby Jones decided we needed some more as he returned the opening second half kickoff 108 yards for a touchdown to give Baltimore a 28-6 lead with 14:46 left in the third quarter. Despite all the excitement and energy in the Mercedes-Benz Superdome the lights went out quickly, literally. At the 13:22 mark in the third quarter and San Francisco facing a 3rd & 13 the lights abruptly went out causing the a power outage in the stadium leading to a 34 minute delay. Once the action resumed all of Baltimore’s momentum had seemed to leave the building and San Francisco made sure to capitalize. The 49ers began a furious comeback attempt a little later in the quarter when Colin Kaepernick capped off a 7 play, 80 yard drive by hitting Michael Crabtree for a 31 yard touchdown reception. A quick 3 & out by Baltimore followed by a 32 yard punt return by Ted Ginn Jr. led to a 6 yard touchdown run by Frank Gore. When it rains, it pours as a few plays later Ray Rice would fumble deep in his own territory, setting up a David Akers field goal.
All of a sudden we had a ball game, 28-23 Ravens early in the fourth quarter and San Francisco with all the momentum; but Joe Cool wasn’t fazed. He would lead Baltimore on a 10 play, 59 yard drive ending in a Justin tucker field goal to get the lead up to eight. The young 49ers’ star wasn’t fazed either, he would march his team down the field and close it off with a 15 yard touchdown run of his own to cut the lead to two; the two-point conversion pass failed. After Tucker kicked another field goal Baltimore led by five with under five minutes left. Kaepernick once again led the 49ers down the field and at the two-minute warning setup a 2nd & Goal at the Raven 5. A perfect story book ending would take place as the Ray Lewis-led Raven Defense made one final goal-line stand keeping San Francisco out of the end zone and away from the Lombardi as the Ravens held on to win 34-31.
Joe Flacco was named Super Bowl MVP, Ray Lewis goes out on top as a champion, and John Harbaugh is the victorious Harbaugh brother. For what looked to be a Baltimore blowout, this game ended up providing all of us an exciting finish for the ages. Joe Flacco has earned himself a nice amount of money and in my books can now be considered an elite quarterback. Baltimore Ravens, Super Bowl XLVII Champions

Super Bowl 47 MVP: Joe Flacco (Bal) 22-37, 287 pass yards, 3 TD

Super Bowl XLVII Sunday

After the long two weeks of endless analysis and opinions, Super Bowl Sunday has finally arrived! Tonight on CBS the 47th edition of America’s greatest pro football event will kickoff approximately at 6:35 pm EST. The Super Bowl is a cultural phenomenon that sparks parties, memories, and many other annual traditions. This year’s matchup features the Baltimore Ravens and the San Francisco 49ers. Whether your over it or have been completely oblivious to ESPN and all sports talk, you should know that this year’s game is featuring two brothers coaching verse one another. John vs. Jim, the “Harbowl” is a few of the alternative names for tonight’s game.

John Harbaugh is the older of the two and is leading his Baltimore Ravens into the game along with the commotion from Ray Lewis’ “Last Ride”; Lewis announced he would retire at the end of the postseason. Jim, the younger brother, in just his second season at the helm made the call in Week 12 of benching Alex Smith in favor of Colin Kaepernick and the move has paid off leading the 49ers to the Super Bowl. The battle of the Harbaugh brothers has added an original twist to the usual Super Bowl hype. People of all interests tune in to watch this cultural phenomenon for a variety of reasons, i.e. the actual game, their team is playing, the halftime show, or the highly popular commercials These other aspects of the big game are what have arguably put Super Bowl Sunday among the elite ranks of Christmas Day and the Fourth of July among our American holidays.

Once you get passed all the media driven headlines, commercials, and your neighbor’s party all that is left is the very reason for today...... THE GAME! Tonight is Super Bowl XLVII between two top teams who have both earned the right to be in New Orleans. Each of these teams has had to deal with adversity, some of it self-inflicted, as well as simply surviving the 20 week NFL season. Playing in the Super Bowl provides the rare opportunity of earning the right to be called a World Champion. So who will it be Ravens or 49ers? Both teams bring solid defenses loaded with stars into this game. The 49ers have the young but multi-talented Colin Kaepernick who has the strides comparable of an ostrich and posses an accurate and powerful arm. They also run their offense out of the pistol formation which has been hard to stop. The Ravens are led by fifth year starter Joe Flacco, the man who throws the “candy” deep ball and is known by Baltimore as “Joe Cool”. The Ravens have sure-handed pro Anquan Boldin and young speedsters Torrey Smith and Jacoby Jones at receiver, in addition to Ray Rice out of the backfield. The 49ers’ pose their own weapons such as Michael Crabtree, Frank Gore, Vernon Davis, and the self proclaimed “best wide receiver in NFL history” Randy Moss. The kicking game heavily favors Baltimore, rookie Justin Tucker has been near automatic this season making all 54 of his extra points (12-12 in playoffs) and 32 of his 35 field goal attempts (2-2 in playoffs) with a long of 56. Meanwhile the 14 year veteran David Akers has had a good season, but has not been as consistent as Tucker. Akers has made all 54 extra points this season (10-10 in playoffs); but field goals have been a different story. He made 29 out of 42 field goal attempts in the regular season and is just 1 of 2 this postseason. So if the game comes down to a clutch kick my money is on Baltimore either way, but there is one other reason I am on Baltimore.

The top theme of this year’s NFL playoffs has been Ray Lewis’ “Last Ride.” The Ravens have risen to whole other level of intensity and heart; whereas the 49ers have done their business and won two games to get here. On paper the 49ers are the favorites, but my eyes and heart tell me otherwise. The Ravens and 49ers are similar enough in talent and skill that an emotional x-factor such as “The Last Ride” can very well make the difference in tonight’s game. If you look at the Super Bowl winners from previous seasons such as the 2005 Steelers, 2007 Giants, 2010 Packers, and 2011 Giants there are glaring similarities to these 2012 Ravens. All these teams were not the popular pick to reach, let alone win the Super Bowl. In the Super Bowl all these for-mentioned teams were overwhelming slated as underdogs by the media just like the Ravens are in tonight’s game. The Ravens have the veteran leadership of Ray Lewis, Ed Reed, and Anquan Boldin to provide the needed edge. I think the Ravens are a team of destiny and have the necessary combination of veteran leadership, talent, scheme, and heart needed to pull off the upset tonight.

Prediction: Ravens 27 49ers 13

Super Bowl MVP: Joe Flacco
