AFL: Week 1 Recap

The opening weekend of the 2013 Arena Football season has come and gone. All fourteen teams played their first game of the 18-game, 19-week season this week. Let's take a look at all seven games.

Utah Blaze 64, Pittsburgh Power 33

The Power played host to the Blaze in the first game to kickoff on the season. These two teams traded touchdowns for their first couple possesions until Caesar Rayford sacked Jordan Jefferson on fourth and ten, giving Utah the ball at the Power 1-yard line. The Blaze would punch it in on one play and take a 27-14 lead with 9:57 left in the 2nd quarter. The Utah defensive line would blow the game open on the next play, when Keenan Mace sacked Jordan Jefferson in the end zone and force a fumble that was recovered by Antwan Marsh. Just like that, two sacks created two quick touchdowns to give Utah a lead for good. The Blaze led 41-27 at the half. The Power had a great opportunity to get themselves back within striking distance, but the chance was gone when Jordan Jefferson threw an interception on the opening drive of the third quarter. The Power defense would come up with a big stop, but despite a second chance to make it a one-possession Jefferson would throw his second interception of the quarter. Ben Stallings scored a on 1-yard touchdown run to make it 48-27. Utah's defense continued to dominate, holding the Power to only a six-point second half and Tommy Grady engineered a couple of touchdown drives in the fourth quarter to make this a clean runaway for the Blaze. Utah wins 64-33 to start the season with a very impressive road win. For the Power, Jordan Jefferson looked good but made rookie mistakes; but that is expected in his AFL debut.

Stats Leaders:

Jacksonville Sharks 64, Tampa Bay Storm 55

The three-time defending south division champs opened their 2013 campaign in Tampa Bay to face in-state foe the Storm. Adrian McPherson excited the Storm fans in his home debut, rushing for five touchdowns while throwing for two more. McPherson broke off a 35-yard touchdown run to tie the game at 21.After a net recovery (On the kickoff, the ball hits the rebound nets and was a live ball that was recovered by the kicking team) he would give Tampa Bay its first lead on a 1-yard TD run. The game waged on as a back-and-forth battle that entered the fourth quarter tied at 42. Bernard Morris and his Sharks had the opportunity to break the tie on the opening series of the quarter, but Morris' pass on fourth and six fell incomplete to give Tampa Bay the ball on the Shark 19-yard line. McPherson would find Greg Ellingson for 14 yards to set up a 1st and goal on the Jacksonville five-yard line. After the first three attempts were unsuccessful, Adrian McPherson would score his fifth rushing touchdown on a one yard run to put Tampa Bay back in the lead. The Sharks tied the game on their next possession when Bernard Morris hit Markee White for a 25-yard touchdown to tie it at 49 with 3:24 left in the game. Michael Lindsey made sure the tie wouldn't last for long by returning the ensuing kickoff 55 yards for a touchdown to give the Storm the lead, but it was only a six point lead because Jacksonville blocked the extra point. Jeff Hughley nearly made it back-to-back kick returns, but he was tackled at midfield. Morris and the offense took over just needing 25 yards with 1:48 to work with. On the first play inside the one-minute timing warning, Morris would connect with Hughley for a 25-yard touchdown to tie it and Marco Capozzoli's extra point gave Jacksonville a one-point lead with 53 seconds left. The Sharks recovered the ensuing onside kick, this is a common arena football strategy, to retain possesion with a lead. Morris would find Jeron Harvey for a 36 yard TD pass and then successfully ran in the two-point conversion to make it a two possession game. The Storm's chance at a wild comeback ended when Greg Ellingson was stopped six yards shy of the end zone on fourth down.

Iowa Barnstormers 63, Chicago Rush 41

An opening night central division matchup in Chicago, the only thing missing was a Rush win. The Stormers couldn't have asked for a much better start, J.J. Raternick led the team on a six play, 47 yard drive that ended on Marco Thomas' 21 yard touchdown recpetion. The Iowa defense forced a missed field goal and Raternick found Darius Reyonds for a 41 yard TD reception to extend the lead to twelve. Raternick would throw three touchdown passes in the second quarter and the Iowa defense continued to halt the Rush offense to give the Stormers a comfortable 39-21 lead at the half. Chicago would come as close to be withing elevan but Iowa kept the foot on the gas and cruised in the fourth quarter, outscoring the Rush 17-6 to post an impressive 22-point road win to begin the season. J.J. Raternick did a great job leading the Barnstormer offense and spreading the passes around to each of his three receivers.

Stats Leaders:

Arizona Rattlers 66, Philadelphia Soul 52

The Rattlers and Soul met in an Arena Bowl rematch on CBS Sports Network's first nationally televised game. Nick Davila and Dan Raudabaugh both looked to be in mid-season form while leading their teams to touchdowns on each of the first five possessions. The Rattlers would lead this shootout 35-32, the difference being the failed extra points by the Soul, at the half. Davila and the Rattlers took advantage of having the ball first in the second half by marching down the field in four plays and 47 yards and taking a ten point lead on Jared Perry's 26 yard TD reception. The flood gates opened when Derrick Ross lost a fumble on Philadelphia's first play of the half that later resulted in three points for the Rattlers. The Sould began the fourth quarter trailing by thirteen, but had the ball on Arizona's eight-yard line down. Things got uglier for Philadelphia when Derrick Ross would lose his second fumble of the night, this time Marcus Pittman returned it 44 yards for a touchdown to give the Rattlers a 59-39 lead. Derrick Ross would redeem himself on the next possession with his second rushing touchdown of the night and the Soul would recover the ensuing onside kick. Raudabaugh led Philadelphia down the field quickly and found Tiger Jones for a nine yard touchdown reception to close the gap to seven with 4:34 remaining. This time the Soul wouldn't be as lucky on the onside kick and Davila found Maurice Purify for the two yard touchdown to get the lead back to double digits. The Soul took over with 100 seconds left and had hope. Raudabaugh completed three passes to get to the Rattler's four-yard line in less than a minute, but the chance at a comeback would finally end when Marquis Floyd stepped in front of a Raudabaugh pass in the end zone to seal the victory for the Rattlers.

Stats Leaders:

San Jose Sabercats 47, San Antonio Talons 42

This game featured two of the oldest quarterbacks in the AFL, but opening game jitters got the best of each in the first half. Both Qb's would commit turnovers on their opening possession, but San Jose struck first when Aaron Garcia found Huey Whittaker for a three yard touchdown. The Talon offense took a while to find their groove, John Dutton threw two interceptions and Jomo Wilson fumbled on their next three drives. San Antonio would finally score with 1:40 left in the half on Rob Quiroga's 21 yard touchdown reception. The Sabercats held a 20-7 halftime lead, but John Dutton quickly cut into it on the opening possession of the second half when he completed a 23-yard touchdown pass to Jomo Wilson. The Sabercats were going down the field looking to get the lead back to thirteen when Fred Shaw intercepted Garcia on the final play of the quarter and returned it for a touchdown. Stefan Demos's extra point gave San Antonio its first lead (28-27) entering the fourth quarter. Aaron Garcia would make ammends on his next throw by hitting Huey Whittaker 40 yards for a touchdown to put San Jose back in front by six. John Dutton answered by finding Jomo Wilson for a 27-yard touchdown to give the Talons a 35-34 lead with 11:34 left. The teams would trade touchdowns on the next two series and with 2:10 remaining San Antonio held a 42-21 advantage. Mervin Brookins returned the following kickoff to his own 18-yard line, Aaron Garcia completed back-to-back passes and just like that San Jose was at the Talon one-yard line with 55 seconds left. The 'Cats had four tries to retake the lead but only needed one as Jarmarko Simmons scored on a one-yard touchdown run to give San Jose a 47-42 lead; the two-point conversion failed. The Talons recovered San Jose's onside kick to put themselves in a position where they had four tries to get eight yards. Consecutive one-yard runs set up a third and goal, but a pass interference on the defense gave the Talons a fresh set of downs and put the ball at the three-yard line with 36 seconds left. The Sabercat defense would hold, forcing two quick passes and recording a sack of Dutton to secure the victory. The Sabercat defense kept San Antonio out of the end zone on seven plays at the end of the game to perserve the win. Aaron Garcia quarterbacked the Talons to the 2012 playoffs, but he began his 2013 by beating his former team to start this season.

Stats Leaders:
San Jose (1-0)                                               San Antonio (0-1)

Spokane Shock 67, Cleveland Gladiators 41

The Shock traveled to Cleveland to face the Gladiators in this Sunday afternoon meeting and dominated from the start. Erik Meyer hit Adron Tennell for a three-yard touchdown to cap off a eight-play, five minute opening drive. The Shock defense would stand up as Paul Schiechl would strip-sack Brian Zbydniewski to give Spokane the ball at the one-yard line. Tennell would run it in on the next play to expant the lead to thirteen. Cleveland tried to match Spokane step-for-step, but couldn't keep up with Erik Meyer's four second-quarter touchdown passes and fell behind 40-20 at the half. Meyer and the Shock offense stayed in rhythm all second half, not giving the Gladiators any chance at a comeback. Spokane cruised to a 67-41 win.

Stats Leaders:
Spokane (1-0)                                               Cleveland (0-1)
Erik Meyer 32-42, 284 yds, 8TD,                 Brian Zbydniewski 25-38, 297 yds, 4TD,

New Orleans VooDoo 51, Orlando Predators 45 F/OT

The last game of opening weekend proved to be the best one. These south division foes put together a three-hour battle that was nothing short of excellant. After the Preds defense came up with a stop to open the game, Kyle Rowley led the offense down the field in four plays and ended the drive by completing a 25-yard touchdown pass to Prechae Rodriguez. The VooDoo would tie the game at seven on their next possession and the defense would make their first stop of the night by forcing a Rowley incompletion on fourth down. The Predator defense responded quickly with a sack of Kurt Rocco in the endzone for a safety. Kyle Rowley hit Jason Geathers for a six-yard touchdown pass to cap of a nine play drive with 9:36 left in the second quarter. New Orleans ended the first half by scoring ten unanswered points to lead 17-16 at the break. Midway through the third quarter Orlando held a 29-24 lead and the VooDoo were ready to keep trading touchdowns when Simeon Castille intercepted a Kurt Rocco pass and returned it to the VooDoo's two-yard line. Jermaine Richardson would get a rushing touchdown to give the Predators a twelve point lead. On the next series Kurt Rocco scored on a three-yard TD run to make it 36-31 entering the fourth. The VooDoo were in desperate need of a stop and got one early in the quarter when Efe Osawemwenze intercepted a Rowley pass and returned it for a touchdown, putting New Orleans back in the lead by two. New Orleans would force a missed field goal on the next Predator possession and looked like they would be able to put the game comfortably out of reach. After three penalties the ball was on the New Orleans three and Rocco dropped back in the end zone only to see Tim Cheatwood come flying through untouched, resulting in his second safety of the day which tied this one at 38. After the New Orleans defense came up big again with another stop, Rocco would lead the offense down the field to find Derek Lee for a four-yard touchdown to give his side a solid seven-point lead. Kyle Rowley and the Preds offense responded by putting together a nine-play, 48-yard drive that was saved with a pass interference on a fourth and six and concluded with Kyle Rowley hooking up with Jason Geathers for a twelve yard touchdown on another fourth down. Mark Lewis's extra point tied it at 45. In the AFL each team receives one possession in overtime and if its still tied, it becomes sudden death. Orlando won the toss and decided to play defense first. Kurt Rocco completed just two passes on the series, but threw a 17-yard touchdown pass to Courtney Smith. Gary Cismesia missed the extra point, his only failed PAT on the day, to give the New Orleans defense only a six point lead to protect. Kyle Rowley and the Preds took the field knowing that a touchdown would tie the game and the PAT would win it. Rowley's first pass of the period found Prechae Rodriguez for nineteen yards to VooDoo 24. The New Orleans defense needed to step up one final time and they did so when Eddie Moten tracked down Rowley's second and final overtime pass in the middle of the end zone to come up with the game-clinching interception. The VooDoo defense played great, putting Rowley under constant pressure, making timely stops, and coming up with two big interceptions.

Stats Leaders:
Orlando (0-1)                                                New Orleans (1-0)

Kyle Rowley 25-48, 319 yds, 5TD, 2 Int      Kurt Rocco 18-40 220 yds 3TD, Int,

Week 1 Players of the Week

Offensive Player of the Week: Erik Meyer, QB of Spokane
- Meyer was flawless in the Shock's season-opening win over Cleveland. Meyer completed 76.2% (32/42) of his passes for 284 yards and eight touchdowns with no interceptions. He also added 16 yards and a touchdown on the ground to provide more-than enough offense to accompany the defense's dominant performance.

Defensive Player of the Week: Ter'ran Benton, Defensive back from Iowa
- Ter'ran Benton wins this week's defensive player for his outstanding performance against Chicago. Benton intercepted a pass and recorded a fumble recovery to headline a solid performance by the Barnstormer defense.

Playmaker of the Week: Huey Whittaker, WR and Linebacker for San Jose
- Whittaker made his prescence felt on both sides of the ball. On offense he was Aaron Garcia's favorite target, catching eight passes for 89 yards and four touchdowns. On defense he recorded five tackles, forced a fumble, and intercepted a John Dutton-pass in the red zone to help San Jose wins its first game of 2013.

2013 Arena Football Season Kickoff - South Division Preview

The last of the previews, is the South Division in the American Conference. The Jacksonville Sharks have won this division for three straight years. Will it be a four-peat for the Sharks, or can either of the prominent AFL franchises return to glory in 2013?

South Division:
-The Georgia Force are no more, but this year's south division looks even better and will be a fun race to watch over the course of 19 weeks.

Jacksonville Sharks
-The pride and joy of professional football in Jacksonville, yes I'm a Jags fan so go ahead and laugh all you want. This is only the Sharks' fourth season, but three division titles and an Arena Bowl title in three years has quickly established this franchise as one of the best in arena football. Can they win a fourth straight South Division title?

What I Like
-I like a lot about this team, beware this is a long list.

-The secondary
  1. Tracy Belton - great addition. Has 27 interceptions in three years and comes from Georgia.
  2. Bill Alford - returns as the second leading tackler and third interception-leader.
  3. Micheaux Robinson - Was a part of the Arena Bowl 24 title team, and returned late in 2012 via a trade. Will be a key piece on the defense.
-An all new defensive line, featuring Jerry Turner, Justin Parrish, and Dusty Bear. All three are proven-veterans who should make for a solid front three.

-Rendrick Taylor returns at fullback. One of the more-overlooked players at his position. Put together a very productive 2012 season and should do no-less in 2013.

-Marco Capozzoli. How can you not like this guy!? Made a 51-yard, game-winning kick in the conference semis to send the Sharks to the conference title game. He is a very consistent kicker.

-Aaron Robbins at Mack linebacker, he is the returning sack-leader on the Sharks.

-Jacksonville bosts a solid offensive line that is filled with experience.

-Bernard Morris is the starting quarterback. Morris is a fun player to watch with his rocket-arm and crazy mobility. Morris is a fantastic QB and the situation gets better with RJ Archer as the backup. Archer has done a good service as astarting QB in this league and even spent a little time with the Detriot Lions in 2012.

-The wide receivers
  1. Jeron Harvey - Stays in Jacksonville after posting 101 receptions, for 970 yards and 25 touchdowns in 2012.
  2. Jeff Hughley - Another piece from the Arena Bowl 24 championship team that returns. Hughley was fantastic in Philadelphia and should provide a big spark to an already-potent Shark offense.
  3. Markee White - Recently acquired in a trade with Arizona. White is a solid reciever who adds depth to this talent-filled group.
  4. Terrance Smith - An ironman who returns after a 99 catch and 29 touchdown season. Look to see him make an impact on both sides of the ball.
-The head coach, Les Moss. Moss has been the man at the helm since day one and all the winning speaks for itself.

What I Don't Like
-This team only has three true defensive backs. Terrance Smith is the fourth option, but still a little to short on depth.

-The loss of Scooter Berry on the defensive line. Berry led them in sacks in 2012, but they have done a solid job to fill his void.

-The loss of Jamarko Simmons, but as the same with Berry his void has been nicely filled.

Key Games on the Schedule
-Open @ Tampa Bay

-Division games: Week 1 @ Tampa Bay, Week 4 vs. New Orleans, Week 10 @ Orlando, Week 15 vs. Orlando, Week 18 @ New Orleans, Week 19 vs. Tampa Bay

-Three consecutive home games (Weeks 14-17)

-Start season on the road for the first three games

-Week 16 bye

Tampa Bay Storm
-The winningest franschise in AFL history looks to return to the postseason for the first time since losing Arena Bowl 23 to Spokane.
-Before we get into my likes and dislikes, one serious note i would like to touch on is R.I.P. Chandler Williams.

What I Like
- The signing of Rashad Barksdale. Won't make the stat sheet with many interceptions, but is a great tackler who comes from Kansas City.

-Paul Griffin on the defensive line. He will have his chance to blossom on the D-Line with the free agency departures.

-Juan Bongarra returns as the kicker. Struggled kicking field goals (5/17), but made 85.9% of his extra points. In case you've been thinking I'm crazy saying that making under 99% of extra points is good, trust me a place kicker has a much smaller target to hit in the AFL.

-Shane Boyd and Adrian McPherson at quarterback. Both have AFL experience, but are also unproven starters.

-The receiving core
  1. Joe Hills - Returns after a solid rookie campaign and looks to have a bigger role in 2013.
  2. Greg Ellingson - Had a great rookie year with New Orleans; so good that after the first six weeks he was tabbed by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers but that didn't work out. The Storm hope he can continue the excellance that he showed in his first two months in the league.
  3. Michael Lindsey - This is his chance to be a stand out at receiver. Lindsey is one of best return man in the the AFL.
What I Don't Like
-The other three members of the secondary have no more than one year of experience.

-Similar story with the defensive line, the other four members also have no more than one year experience.

-Question marks at both linebacker positions.

-I like, but also dislike Shane Boyd and Adrian McPherson at QB. McPherson hasn't played in the AFL since 2007 and Shayne Boyd comes in with limited experience in Milwaukee on his resume. Both quarterbacks are mobile and make it hard to predict how this Storm offense will function in 2013.

-The loss of Prechae Rodriguez to in-state rival Orlando. He was the team's leading receiver in 2012.

-The lose of all three of their leading tacklers from 2012.

Key Games on the Schedule
-Open vs. Jacksonville

-Division games: Week 1 vs. Jacksonville, Week 5 @ Orlando, Week 7 vs. New Orleans, Week 13 vs. Orlando, Week 14 @ New Orleans, Week 19 @ Jacksonville

-Week 16 bye

Orlando Predators
-Coming off the worst season in team history, the Preds will try and at least acheive their gurantee of ten-plus wins, let alone return to the post season in 2013.

What I Like
-Offered Tim Tebow a contract, it can't hurt.

-The guarantee of a winning season, or a refund to all the fans:
http://www.arenafootball.com/sports/a-footbl/spec-rel/012313aab.html
-The additions of Levy Brown and Simeon Castille at defensive back. Both are proven corners that possess great tackling and ball-hawking skills.

-The return of Terrence Carter and Quinn Pitcock who combined for 11 sacks in 2012.

-The verteran kicker Mark Lewis, who has become very reliable.

-A huge upgrade at quarterback with Kyle Rowley. I think Rowley has found a new home and will be welcomed with open arms by the Preds faithful when his championship-pedigree and on-field leadership brings this franchise back into contention.

-This group of receivers.
  1. Josh Bush - Returns to the Predators after spending 2012 in New Orleans. Bush is classic professional and still brings solid hands to this team.
  2. Jason Geathers - Another ultimate profesional. Geathers has always been that journey-man who made an impact wherever he has gone, should be the same stroy here.
  3. T.T. Toliver - A face of the franchise, Toliver stays in Orlando to headline this group of receivers in 2013.
  4. Marcus Everett - A sneaky-good acquistion by Orlando. Everett is the definition of a modern-day iron man. Has great awareness on both sides of the ball and will play a huge role as a linebacker on defense and a spot-duty offensive weapon.
  5. Prechae Rodriguez - Was the arch-rival, Tampa Bay's leading receiver in 2012. What a way to add even more heat to an already elite rivalry by swithcing sides!
What I Don't Like
-The lack of depth on the offensive line.

-A lack of depth in the middle of the defense.

-Long-time Predator, Marlon Moye-Moore has finally retired.

Key Games on the Schedule
-Open @ New Orleans

-Division games: Week 1 @ New Orleans, Week 5 vs. Tampa Bay, Week 10 vs. Jacksonville, Week 12 @ Tampa Bay, Week 15 @ Jacksonville, Week 19 vs. New Orleans

-Four game road trip in the middle of the season (Weeks 6-9)

-Week 4 bye

New Orleans VooDoo
-Their appearance in the 2012 playoffs was a great turn around from having the League's worst record in 2011. The VooDoo will try to make it consecutive playoff appearances in 2013.

What I Like
-The addition of Eddie Moten and the return of Demarcus Robinson in the secondary. Robinson was a solid defender in 2012 and will assume a bigger role with the departures of Alvin ray Jackson and Jeremy Kellem. Eddie Moten can still play at a high level and will bring seven years of experience with him to the Graveyard.

-The defensive line pair of Xavier Brown and Marlon Favorite.

-James Bryant as the mack linebacker.

- The VooDoo's quarterback situation.
  1. Kurt Rocco - is a young and very talented quarterback. Rocco looks to build on a strong 2012 performance in his second year in New Orleans.
  2. Zack Eskridge - Flashed ability when he got the chance to start for Kansas City in 2012. Eskridge is a great back-up and can bu used in short-yardage situations.
-All six VooDoo receivers
  1. Chris Duvalt - Duvalt has shown flashes of talent, but has had trouble staying on the field.
  2. Donovan Morgan - A huge acquisition from Philadelphia. "Captain Morgan" will be Rocco's top target in 2013 and has been a star wherever he has played.
  3. Brent Holmes - A nice piece to add to this group. Has never been the top guy, but can contribute and adds depth.
  4. Quorey Payne - The VooDoo's top returning receiver. Payne and Morgan should make a tough 1-2 combo for opposing defenses to stop.
  5. Courtney Smith - Had a solid 2012 season and with Rocco should continue to produce this year.
  6. Derek Lee - A late, but good addition. Derek Lee brings veteran leadership to this team and can also still play. Can be best used inside the five yard-line on jump ball situations.
What I Don't Like
- The youth on the defensive line.

-The lack of depth on the offensive line.

-The loss of Alvin Ray Jackson and Jeremy Kellem. The 2012 leaders in tackles and interceptions will be missed.

Key Games on the Schedule
-Open vs. Orlando

-Division games: Week 1 vs. Orlando, Week 4 @ Jacksonville, Week 7 @ Tampa Bay, Week 13 vs. Tampa Bay, Week 18 vs. Jacksonville, Week 19 @ Orlando

-Three straight road games in weeks 15-17 and four of the last five games are on the road.

-Week 3 bye

Predicted Order of Finish
  1. Jacksonville
  2. Orlando
  3. New Orleans
  4. Tampa Bay
-The Sharks know how to win and its simple as that. This year's team is a lot better than the 2012 squad who was able to win a thrid straight division title, so it only makes sense for a fourth consecutive division title in 2013. The Sharks are also more equipped to challenege the Soul for the conference crown.
-The Predators have made all the right moves to reclaim their place on-top of arena football. With a win or refund guarantee to the fans, the Kyle Rowley-led Predators will be much better in 2013.
-The VooDoo should compete this year in the division and for a playoff spot. Don't count this team out.
-I wouldn't be surprised if the Storm made the playoffs but as you could see from the above preview, this is the team that I dislike the most about. I feel the lack of experience at quarterback and on defense will keep this team from the postseason.
*Don't expect the division winner to have a gaudy record, I division winner will finish with eleven or twelve wins and that three of these teams will win at least nine games.

2013 Arena Football Season Kickoff - East Division Preview

We now flip to the American Conference and will start by taking a look at the East.

East Division:
-The Milwaukee Mustangs are still apart of Arena Football but have chosen to sit out this 2013 season, leaving this a three-team division.

Cleveland Gladiators
-Cleveland has been a successful franchise and has become accustomed to postseason success. This year looks like it might be a long one for the Gladiators, who have a lot of youth on the roster.

What I Like
-Derik Steiner returns at fullback. Underrated at his position, he has become a touchdown machine in short yardage situations.

-Brian Zbydniewski as the starting quarterback. Some of you arena football fans may not know Zbydniewski that well, but he was a servicable back-up with Tampa Bay for the last couple years. I'm glad he finally gets a solid chance to be a starter in this League, his performance as a starter is to be tested.

-Wide Receivers Dominick Goodman and Thyron Lewis both return. Goodman had a breakout 2012, catching 170 passes for 1,782 yards and 34 touchdowns. In 2013 Goodman has his sights set for a 2,000 yard season. The Loss of Robert Redd will free open more balls to be thrown Lewis's and Goodman's way in 2013, which make for one of the better tandems in the AFL.

What I Don't Like
-Losing Robert Redd, Levy Brown, and Joe Phinisee. Redd was a familiar face to the Cleveland fans, but his time in red and black has finally come to an end. Brown and Phinisee made one of the top secondary tandems, but with both men gone Cleveland has to rely on inexperience to guard their end zone.

-A starting trend for the Glads, their center is a rookie.

-As mentioned, a young secondary with no one having more than two years of AFL experience.

-A young defensive line that contains two rookies and one second-year player

-The kicker is a rookie

-Three of the four linebackers are rookies

-Overall, 10 of the 11 players on defense are either rookies or in their 2nd season

-Having Philadelphia in the division isn't something to throw a party over.
Key games on the Schedule

-Open vs. Spokane

-Division games: Week 5 @ Philadelphia, Week 10 @ Pittsburgh, Week 15 vs. Philadelphia, Week 16 vs. Pittsburgh

-Week 4 bye

Philadelphia Soul
-The defending American Conference champs look poised for a second straight division title and another trip to the Arena Bowl in 2013. The Soul didn't loose much and made it for their losses with some solid offseason acquistions.

What I Like
-Rayshaun Kizer and LaRico Stevenson in the secondary. Kizer is an elite corner and is coming of an eleven-interception season. Stevenson was added late in 2012, but is a very talented player who needs to keep his head on straight.

-The defensive line keeps Dustin Barno and Bryan Robinson.  These two combined for 15 sacks in 2012, ten of them belonging to Robinson.

-Derrick Ross. The best fullback in arena football. Set rushing records in 2012 with 645 yards and 32 touchdowns. Love his "Push-mower" dance and watching him go on screen passes is one of the best things on TV.

-The linebacking core of Joe Goosby as the Jack and Brandon Perkins at the Mack. Two of the top tacklers will start in the heart of the team's defense. Goosby had four interceptions in 2012, while Perkins recorded four sacks in 2012.

-The kicker, Carlos Martinez who is a proven veteran entering his ninth season. 88.9% on extra points and 13/23 field goals with Georgia in 2012.

-Dan Raudabaugh. Arguably the top QB in the AFL, love his game and leadership.

-The Soul receivers

  1. Larry Brackins - as traditional of a goal-line target as they come. Has great hands to go with his strong six-foot, five-inch frame. Unstoppable inside the five yardline.
  2. Tiger Jones - Returns after setting franchise records with a 2,000-yard season. We get to see year three of the Raudabaugh-Jones connection.
  3. Alvance Robinson - A great pick-up from Utah. Going from one top passer in Tommy Grady to another in Dan Raudabaugh is never a bad thing.
  4. Andrae Thurman - Comes from the now-dormit Milwaukee. Thurman will be a nice third/fourth option to this team.
What I Don't Like-The loss of Kent Richardson to NFL.

-The loss of long-time fan favorite Donovan Morgan to New Orleans.

Key Games on the Schedule
-Open @ Arizona

-Division games: Week 5 vs. Cleveland, Week 8 vs. Pittsburgh, Week 13 @ Pittsburgh, Week 15 @ Cleveland

-First three games of the season are on the road.

-Week 2 bye

Pittsburgh Power
-2013 will be the third year of operation for the Power, and hopefully will also be the first winning season in team history. The Power look forward to better things in 2013, after a frustrating 5-13 campaign.

What I Like
-Beau Elliott stays put as center. Couldn't ask for much better to anchor the offensive line, can also be a solid contributer on the D-Line.

-The much-improved secondary

  1. Sergio Gilliam - Comes from San Antonio. Gilliam will bring a much needed upgrade to the Power defensive backs, along with playoff experience.
  2. Christian Wise - Played on both sides on the ball in 2012. This year he will be asked to start at defensive back. A young player who, in my book has a lot of upside.
  3. Chris LeFlore - Lead the team in interceptions in 2012 to cement his break out season. It's key that he keeps up his production in 2013 for the Power to make any push towards the postseason.
-Having Dominie Pittman and Neil Purvis return to the D-Line. Pittman led the team in sacks in 2012 and Purvis has become a household name for the Power faithful.

-Tyre Young returns to the team in 2013. Not the greatest fullback, but is versatile which allows him to shift to play a little nose tackle if needed.

-The best signing of the offseason, Alvin Ray Jackson as the jack linebacker. The second year in a row that the Power have lured a top player from New Orleans to come to Pittsburgh. ARJ is the man needed to lead this defense.

-The receiving core
  1. Mike Washington - The only leading receiver Pittsburgh has known. One of my favorite players in the AFL who has one of the best nicknames, the "Joystick".
  2. PJ Berry - Returns for his second season with the Power. An elite receiver/playmaker in his own right. Feared returnman and also holds a sweet nickname, "Superman".
  3. Shamar Graves - A great addition from Jacksonville. Graves is a versatile receiver who can also return kicks and help out in the secondary.
  4. Perry Baker - A tall lenghty receiver who returns to keep this group of receivers in-tact. Soild player who is a tall target in the red-zone.
What I Don't Like
-The lack of depth lack of depth on the offesnive line. Beau Elliott's prescence and Jordan Jefferson's (QB) mobility could be a great neutralizer.

-A lack of true linebackers to go along side with Alvin Ray Jackson.

-Both quarterbacks are rookies. Jordan Jefferson, yes the former-LSU Tiger, is the starter. The length of the learning curve for Jefferson could very well decide whether the Power will be playing August-football.

-Staring at the in-state rival, Philadelphia a-top the division.

Key Games on the Schedule
-Open vs. Utah

-Division games: Week 8 @ Philadelphia, Week 10 vs. Cleveland, Week 13 vs. Philadelphia, Week 16 @ Cleveland

-Have three sets of back-to-back road games

-Week 3 bye, Why so early after the first two games are at home!?!?!?!?

 Predicited Order of Finish
  1. Philadelphia
  2. Pittsburgh
  3. Cleveland
-The Soul are even better in 2013 for a number of reasons, with the major one being their embarassing defeat in Arena Bowl 25. The Soul are my favorites to repeat as American Conference champs and to go to Arena Bowl 26 for a rematch with Arizona.
-The Power will be better this year and I believe will challenge for a their first playoff birth in team history.
-I think this will be a rough season for the Gladiators. Too much inexperience and youth on this team to compete every week this season.

2013 Arena Football Season Kickoff - Central Division Preview

We have already taken a look at the Western Division in the National Conference, now its time to look at the Central Division.

Central Division
-Only three teams this year with the departure of Kansas City, but still bodes for good competition.

Chicago Rush
-Amid a new ownership group, the Rush will look to get back to the familiar environment of the playoffs. 2012 was the first time in team history that there was no post season, this year they will try to avoid consecutive losing seasons.

What I Like
-The defensive backs:
  1. Vic Hall - Easily is one of the best and most versatile defensive backs in the AFL.
  2. Joe Phinisee - Was arguably the best defensive back in Cleveland, very good pick up for the Rush.
  3. Jorrick Calvin - Returns to Chicago after having a solid season.
  4. Semaj Moody - Stays in Chicago and returns as one of the leaders in tackles from 2012.
-Anthony Hoke comes over to headline the defensive line.

-J.J. Payne as the fullback, proved in 2012 that he is in the top group of fullbacks in arena football.

-Kelvin Morris at the jack linebacker. Originally left for Orlando, but was brought back via a trade. Morris is one of the better jacks in the League and is a staple to this defense.

-Wide Receivers:
  1. Rodney Wright - Chicago's second best offseason acuistion. Wright comes from San Jose and brings veteran leadership to this team.
  2. Reggie Gray - The Rush's best play maker of the last two seasons returns. Gray is an elite receiver and is also a feared return man.
  3. Nate Forse - Comes from Orlando. Tends to be overlooked, but is a very reliable receiver.
What I Don't Like
-The QB situation. Carson Coffman who is in his second season, but has played very little or Zach Frazier who is a rookie out of Conneticuit. Both candidates lack experience and the chemistry with this group of receivers. The Rush are capable of a playoff run, but their QB could hold them back.

-Not enough depth on the offensive line.

Key Games on the Schedule
-Open vs. Iowa

-Division games: Week 1 vs. Iowa, Week 3 @ San Antonio, Week 6 @ Iowa, Week 13 vs. San Antonio

-Week 15 bye

Iowa Barnstormers
-The Barnstormers could be a darkhorse in the Central Division and maybe in the National Conference in 2013.

What I Like
-Jason Simpson - One of the best defensive backs in arena football, had an outstanding 2012 that got passed over because of Iowa's struggles. This year should be just as good, but will have more responsibility with younger and new members in the secondary.

-The defensive line
  1. Rodney Gnat - Returning leader on the Barnstormer D-Line. Gnat is a solid pass rusher and a force to be recken with.
  2. Mike Lewis -  A sneaky good pick up for Iowa. Recorded 23 sacks in his last two seasons with utah.
-Iowa also boast a great Jack-Mack linebacker combination of John Mohring(Jack) Darnell Carter(Mack). These two finished 2012 in the top 3 in tackles and each contributed in interceptions and sacks. This tandem provides Iowa with a healthy linebacking core.

-JJ Raterink - Has grown into a leader and has also become a top quarterback. Raterink is mobile as a runner and an even more efficent passer. The right man to lead this team.

-The receiving core
  1. Collin Taylor - Returns and will have to step up in the abscence of Jesse Schmidt, but the connection with Raterink is already established.
  2. Darius Reynolds - Comes from division-rival Chicago. Reyonds is a young player who has a lot of upside and will get his chance this season.
  3. Marco Thomas - In the same role as Taylor.
What I don't Like
-The lack of experience in the secondary. A lot of new faces surround Jason Simpson, whether this will hurt Simpson or Simpson will help this is to be determined.

-This offensive line is extremely young, with no one having more than one year of AFL experience.

-NO Jesse Schmidt. This man had 172 receptions for 2,218 yards, and 58 touchdowns in 2012. Last i checked he is a free agent, doesn't make any sense how he is not on any roster, let alone on this one.

Key Games on the schedule
-Open @ Chicago
-Division games: Week 1 @ chicago, Week 6 vs. Chicago, Week 7 @ San Antonio, Week 15 vs. San Antonio

-Week 16 bye

-Back-to-back division games weeks 6 and 7.

San Antonio Talons
-The Talons look for repeat success from the 2012 regular season, but would like to go farther in the playoffs in 2013.

What I Like
-The Talon secondary:
  1. Carlton Brown - Brought in coming off a career year with Utah.
  2. Justin Hannah - A solid defensive back that is coming from division-rival Chicago.
  3. Andre Jones - An experienced corner that is a good fit, coming from San Jose.
  4. Fred Shaw - The only Talon returning to the secondary for this year, but led the team with eight interceptions in 2012.
-The bolstered defensive line. San Antonio lured in two more from San Jose in free agency, the reigning defensive player of the year in Joe Sykes and Tim McGill. These two choose to take their talents to the Alamo and should create the most feared defensive line in the Central.

-The linebacking core of Jamar Ransom at the Jack and Victor Degrate at the Mack. Both a returning starters and make a dominate middle of this defense.

-Moqut Ruffins has become one of the better offensive lineman in arena football, great center piece to have.

-The quarterback situation. Despite losing Garcia to San Jose, fitting after all the players they took, they aquired John Dutton and brought Rohan Davey back to the AFL. Another future hall-of-famer as your starter, with a vertan back-up is always the ideal quarterback situation.

-The wide receivers
  1. Dwayne Eley Jr. - One of the fastest receivers in the League who is versatile as a ball carrier will fit nicely in the offense and the return game.
  2. Burl Toler - Solid reciever who chose to stay in dark blue and black in 2013.
  3. Jomo Wilson - Returns as the leading receiver and is just a physical freak. One of the top ten wideouts in arena football.
  4. Rob Quiroga - Also is a mainstay on this roster. Quiroga is a great possesion receiver and should get plenty of opportunity this year without having to battle Jason Willis or Derek Lee for passes.
-At first, I thought this team was going to be in for a long year, but I love the acquisitions they made to replace all their holes from free agency.

What I Don't Like
- The loss of Chad "Tank" Cook. Losing the second-best fullback in the League is never a positive thing.

-I have nothing else to not like about this team, fantastic job in re-tooling their roster with talent and veteran prescence.

Key Games on the Schedule
-Open vs. San Jose

-Division games: Week 3 vs. Chicago, Week 7 vs. Iowa, Week 13 @ Chicago, Week 15 @ Iowa

-Three game road trip (weeks 4-6)

-Week 2 bye                                                                                                                                                                 Predicted Order of Finish
  1. San Antonio
  2. Iowa
  3. Chicago
-The Talons have done a fantastic job in retooling their team and look capable of winning the central again in 2013 and could once again challenge the heavy-weights of the west in the National Conference.
-The Barnstormers could be the dark horse of 2013. Don't be surprsied if we see this team in August.
-Chicago looks like a playoff team and his the franchise pedigree of a winner. This year's team has one major hole and that's at the quarterback position. They won't be a walkover, but someone has to be at the bottom and in arena football, no quarterback usually means no playoffs.

2013 Arena Football Season Kickoff - Wild West Preview

This year's Arena Football season is hours away from kicking off. The wall-to-wall action of indoor madness begins Saturday night at 6 p.m. in Pittsburgh when the Power play host to the Utah Blaze. Before the action begins its just that we go through the good and the bad for each team and list some key games on the 19 week, 18 game schedule. We'll start with the "West is the Best" Division.

West Division
- Without a doubt, the best division in 2012 and looks to be the best division in arena football again in 2013.

Arizona Rattlers
- The defending Arena Bowl champs look poised for a repeat in 2013. Have loads of talent on both sides of the ball and have plenty of championship experience on the roster.

What I Like -Nick Davila, Qb. One of the League's best quarterbacks, enough said.

-The Wide Receiver core:

  1. Maurice Purify - one of the top receivers in arena football, team's leading receiver from 2012.
  2. Jared Perry - One of the best pickup of the offseason, ranked in the top group receivers as a rookie with Chicago in 2012.
  3. Tysson Poots - Another fantastic offseason acquisition. Comes over from division-rival Utah after a breakout season with the Blaze.
  4. Kerry Reed - Veteran receiver, returning from 2012 champion team.
  5. Rod Windsor - Was the top receiver in arena football before spending a good part of the last two seasons with the NFL's Cleveland Browns. Returns to Arizona to open arms and aonly makes this already elite group even more potent.
-Odie Armstrong, a battle-tested veteran returns at fullback.

-The defensive line of Marcus Pittman, Anttaj Hawthorne, and Cliff Dukes. Dukes and Hawthorne had their way with opposing offensive lines in 2012, this duo returns looking to do even more damage in 2013.

-The defensive backs: Virgil Gray, Marquis Floyd, Arkeith Brown. This will be the second consecutive year these three will patrol the the defensive backfield and cause havoc for opposing QB's. All three of these guys could easily be the top man on any other squad, but have developed a priceless chemistry in Arizona that looks to be elite.

What I don't Like
- Spoiler alert, I like pretty much everything about this team.

-Garrett Lindholm is the only real question i have towwards this team. He last played in the League in 2011 with Milwaukee, but performed well making 62.5% of field goals and 83.7% of his extra points.

-The strength of west division, reason why the saying goes "West is best".

Key Notes of the Schedule

-Open vs. Philadelphia in a rematch of Arena Bowl 25, also the first game on CBS Sports Network.

-Three straight divisional games in weeks 2-4, with two of them on the road.

-Division games; Week 2 @ Utah in, Week 3 vs. San Jose, Week 4 @ Spokane, Week 8 vs.Utah, Week 13 vs. Spokane, Week 14 @ San Jose.

-Week 15 bye.

San Jose Sabercats

- Poised at another playoff run this year's Sabercats team is reaquipped for success. Mark Grieb finally called it quits leaving a vacancy at quarterback for the first time in well over a decade, so what did the 'Cats do to fill it; signed future hall-of-famer Aaron Garcia to lead the troops.

What I Like - The defensive backs:

  1. Mervin Brookins - Has iron-man capabilities and is becoming one of the best defensive backs in arena football.
  2. Andre Freeman - Rookie out of Slippery Rock University, where he earned all-conference honors.
  3. JC Neal - Was the staple of Kansas City's defense for years, great veteran addition.
  4. Clevan Thomas - The old Sabercat returns in 2013, will bring years of experince to this team.
-The kicker, Nich Pertuit who made 1 of 2 field goals and 90.4% of extra points in 2012.

-Bringing Aaron Garcia in to be the new quarterback. It's simple, any time you can add one of the all-time greats to your team, you win.

-Just like Arizona, this is a very talented and deep group of wide receivers:
  1. Samora Goodson - Has a chance to be the top reciever on this team, been very productive in his first two years.
  2. Jamarko Simmons - A sneaky good acquisition for the Sabercats. The Garcia-Simmons connection is reunited and looks to stay strong in 2013.
  3. Huey Whittaker - Quietly has become a pretty good iron-man, love his game and his heart even more.
  4. Jason Willis - Another smart transaction, jsut like Garcia came over from San Antonio
  5. Fred Williams - Another reciever who has quietly put up solid numbers for the 'Cats the last two years.
-Darren Arbett (Head Coach) - My favorite coach, owner in the Arena Football League. This guy has a fantastic mind of the game, but is even more classy.

What I Don't Like
-Four rookies on the offensive line, Aaron Garcia isn't getting any younger so it's crucial to keep this future hall-of-famer upright.

-The lose of Gabe Nyenhuis on the defensive line leaves a huge hole to fill.

-The strength of the west division, this will be also be seen on Utah's and Spokane's write-up.

Key Games on Schedule

-Open season at San Antonio

-Division games: Week 3 @ Arizona, Week 5 vs. Spokane, Week 10 vs. Utah, Week 11 @ Spokane, Week 14 vs. Arizona, Week 15 @ Utah.

-Two sets of back-to-back divisional games.

-Week 4 bye.

Spokane Shock
- Despite winning ten games, the Shock were kept out of the postseason and look ready to make a run at it this year.

What I Like
- The defensive back tandem of Terrance Sanders and Paul Stephens. Sanders has become one of most feared return men in the League, but also is on the way to becoming one of the top defensive backs. Stephens is also no slouch, he can hold his on against any receiver.

- James Ruffin, the returningsack leader, headlines an average defensive line.

-Kenny Spencer returns as kicker. Spencer was very reliable in 2012, I expect to see the same in 2013.

-Beau Bell as mac linebacker, which is the centerpeice of an AFL defense. Bell has shown great instincts and is a solid man at this position.

-Erik Meyer returns and will be the starting quarterback without having to look over his shoulder. Meyer has good decision making ability and is very mobile. Meyer can be a dark-horse for breakout player of the year.

-The wide receiver core:

  1. Steven Black - Had a very nice 2012 season, was overshadowed by his teammate Adron Tennell.
  2. Kamar Jorden - A rookie out of Bowling Green, Jordan was a big part of the Falcons success during his college days and his versatility should translate nicely to the AFL.
  3. Jeffrey Soloman - Had a solid rookie season for the Shock in 2012 and with a year under his belt should play a bigger role in the offense this season.
  4. Adron Tennell - One of the elite receivers in arena ball stays in Spokane. He is coming of a year where he caught 157 passes for 1,810 yards and had 40 touchdowns. At the beginning of March Tennell has made it his goal to become the AFL's best, any man on a mission is a dangerous thing which is great news for the Shock. http://kndu.membercenter.worldnow.com/story/21545983/tennell-wants-to-be-afls-top-receiver
 What I don't Like
-The Shock have finally gotten rid of Kyle Rowley. Even though I like Meyer at QB, Rowley ahs done soo much for this franchise which is why I can't understand the reason he is out of town.

-One glaring weakness is the lack of depth on the defensive line. Other than Ruffin, who will step up as a pass rusher.

-The strength of the wild, wild west division.

Key Games on Schedule
-Open the season at Cleveland

-Three straight road games to start season

-Division gaems: Week 4 vs. Arizona, Week 5 @ San Jose, Week 7 @ Utah, Week 11 vs. San Jose, Week 13 @ Arizona, Week 14 vs. Utah.

-All the division games come in a three-game in four-week stretch.

-Week 15 bye.

Utah Blaze
- The Blaze are coming off a appearance in the National Conference title game in 2012. The Blaze ended the year as one of the hottest teams and highlighted it with a upset of top-seeded San Antonio in the conference semifinals. The defending offensive player of the year Tommy Grady returns to quarterback the Blaze, but do they have enough to make a title run in 2013.

What I Like
- Ben stallings returns at fullback. Stallings may be the best pass-catching fullback in the game and is another weapon at Grady's disposal.

- Tommy Grady at quarterback. He is the reigning offensive player of the year and there's nothing to not like about his game

-The receiving core:

  1. L.J. Castille - A great acquistion as he comes from New Orleans. Castille posses great hands and size, making him a favorite target of Grady's.
  2. Aaron Lesue - One of my favorite receivers, who is also one of the best. Is Grady's top target.
  3. Brandon Thompkins - Comes from division-foe Spokane where he was a solid third option. Should be the third option in Utah, but is a good one.
What I Don't Like
-This team lacks experience at defensive back.

-There is also no standout on the defensive line

- The Blaze have a rookie kicker, could be good but kicking in arena football is majorly different from football.

-This is a useful offensive line, Grady needs to be protected.

-The fact that Tysoon Poots is now a Rattler.

-The strength of the west division.

Key Games on schedule
-Open at Pittsburgh

-Division games: Week 2 vs. Arizona, Week 7 vs. Spokane, Week 8 @Arizona, Week 10 @San Jose, Week 14 @ Spokane, Week 15 vs. San Jose.

-Two back-back sets of divisional games and a stretch where they will play three division games in a four week span.

-Week 4 bye.

Predicted Order of Finish
  1. Arizona
  2. San Jose
  3. Spokane
  4. Utah
- The Rattlers are my favorites to repeat as Arean Bowl Champs, meaning that i see them winning the West Division and National Conference.
- I can see San Jose winning this division in 2013, if we are lucky we will see a Sabercat-Rattler meeting in the again in this year's playoffs.
-Spokane should challenge for the fourth and final playoff spot this year and could be a dark horse in this division.
-I think Utah can win nine to elevan games, but to me they are the weakest team in the wild west, which will keep them from a return to the postseason.
